Fact check

Roger Marshall is lying about Adam Hamilton.

Here’s the truth.

Sen. Roger Marshall

PPP Loan

LIE: Adam Hamilton “Pocketed $3 million in taxpayer-funded COVID relief.”

TRUTH: This claim is completely false. In 2020, Resurrection sought a Paycheck Protection Program loan amid fears that the economic downturn would prevent them from paying their 427 employees. The church was one of less than 1% of PPP recipients that voluntarily repaid its loan in its’ entirety, with interest. Roger Marshall supported the PPP, which he called one of the most successful programs of the pandemic response and “instrumental to keeping our state’s small businesses open.”

Four Homes

LIE: Adam Hamilton used his position at the church to buy four homes.

TRUTH: This claim is wholly inaccurate - Adam and his wife borrowed against their retirement to help his adult daughters find their homes. They are in their thirties with full time jobs but still could not afford a home in Kansas. The average age to buy a home now is 40, in part because of decisions made in Washington that have raised prices and costs on everything for everyone. When Adam was growing up he could afford a home for him and his wife on his Pastor’s salary. Now he’s being attacked for helping his family have their own homes by the same people who created this housing crisis in the first place.

Roger Marshall, meanwhile, sold his home in Kansas days after being sworn into the Senate and claims to live now at a small property in the state. He kept his $1.5 million Sarasota, Florida oceanside house and has spent nearly $20,000 of your tax dollars on almost a dozen trips to the area. His office has repeatedly refused to explain what government business required him to go to Florida so often.

False Claims About Sermons

LIE: Adam Hamilton said people should repent for eating beef and being white.

TRUTH: Adam Hamilton has never said either of these things. Reporters have repeatedly debunked this claim, noting “they base that allegation on a misleading stitching together” parts of sermons, calling the ads “wildly misleading” as the words were never said in “that sequence.” Roger Marshall’s own pastor called Hamilton a “middle of the road pastor who is willing to listen to all sides.”

While Marshall is making up these smears, he’s actually said very similar things himself. In 2020, he told a student group that racism existed because people “have [forgotten] who God is and [forgotten what] faith really means.” He proposed legislation to “produce less methane from our cow herds and the cattle feeding industry” because “everyone’s concerned about methane production in the cattle industry.” Marshall bragged that decline in the cattle herd “eliminated half of the methane gas produced from cattle.” He even voted to put warning labels on hot dogs and bacon!

Drag Queens

LIE: Adam Hamilton spent church funds on drag queen shows.

TRUTH: Adam Hamilton hasn’t gone to a drag show or met a drag queen. He has specifically said a drag event would not be appropriate for his church. In reality, Adam’s church handed out water bottles as one of 60 organizations that attended a local festival, letting people who have felt pushed out of their churches know that Christ welcomed them. Other organizations that participated included 21 other Christian churches, police departments, fire departments, and building trade unions.

Abuse Claim

LIE: Adam Hamilton’s church protected a predator and never reported abuse to law enforcement

TRUTH: These smears have been repeatedly debunked by journalists who actually examined public records: “Those records, which largely do not name Hamilton, show that his church conducted an internal investigation about the abuse, reported it to law enforcement after identifying the abuser and that Hamilton personally played a role in a report about additional abuse by the perpetrator.”

The Kansas City Star. Read the story

…a series of court records reviewed by The Star paint a more complex picture that does not back up the core of his claims. Those records, which largely do not name Hamilton, show that his church conducted an internal investigation about the abuse, reported it to law enforcement after identifying the abuser and that Hamilton personally played a role in a report about additional abuse by the perpetrator.

Marshall is only resurfacing this smear to cover up his record of voting to block the release of the Epstein files, protecting the worst predators and pedophiles from seeing justice. He called releasing the files a “political stunt,” said they were “not interesting” and accused people who wanted them released of having “psychosis.” Marshall himself received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from men named in the Epstein files. Marshall also voted against re-authorizing the Violence Against Women Act, which funds programs for the victims of sexual assault.

Transcript

I’m Adam Hamilton and I approve this message. Roger Marshall’s at it again, lying about Adam Hamilton to cover up having his own patients arrested. The truth: over 20 years ago, Hamilton’s church reported incidents involving a volunteer to law enforcement and then cut ties with him. Hamilton later helped get this predator convicted. It’s Roger Marshall who’s failed to protect victims of predators. He blocked the release of the Epstein files, hiding crimes of pedophiles. Marshall protected the powerful, not us.
